How to Open a Bank Account in New Zealand as an International Student

Learning how to open a bank account in New Zealand as an international student can make it easier to receive money from abroad, pay rent, manage tuition expenses and use a local debit card.

International students can usually begin the application online, and some banks accept applications before the student travels. However, an account opened from overseas may remain restricted until the student arrives and completes identity verification.

Can International Students Open a New Zealand Bank Account?

Yes. You do not need to be a New Zealand citizen to open an account. Banks such as ASB accept eligible customers holding long-term visas, including student visas, subject to identity, address and compliance checks.

Students can choose between:

  • An everyday or transaction account for spending
  • A savings account for emergency funds
  • An international student account
  • A foreign-currency account
  • A term deposit for money that will not be needed immediately

For most students, a no-fee everyday account with a debit card is the best starting point.

How to Open a Bank Account in New Zealand as an International Student

Step 1: Choose a Suitable Bank Account

Several New Zealand banks provide accounts suitable for international students.

Westpac International Student Account

Westpac offers an account specifically for eligible students from overseas. It currently includes:

  • No monthly account fee
  • No standard electronic transaction fees
  • Debit-card access
  • Mobile and internet banking
  • Discounted foreign-exchange margins
  • An optional foreign-currency account

Applicants generally need a valid student visa, full-time enrolment at an eligible institution and regular funds paid into the account.

ASB Everyday Account

ASB offers an everyday account with:

  • No monthly account fee
  • No standard transaction fees
  • Visa Debit card without an annual card fee
  • Mobile and internet banking

Eligible students can apply before moving to New Zealand, depending on their current country of residence.

BNZ YouMoney

BNZ YouMoney allows students to create several separate accounts for rent, groceries and other expenses. Eligible newcomers can apply from overseas and receive internet-banking details before arrival. The account must then be activated at a BNZ branch.

ANZ Go Account

ANZ allows eligible newcomers to begin opening an account before arrival. Overseas applicants must provide their current residential address and later activate the account after reaching New Zealand.

Kiwibank Free Up

Kiwibank requires newcomers to be physically present in New Zealand before joining. International students generally need a student visa, local residential address and New Zealand mobile number.

Step 2: Prepare the Required Documents

Requirements vary, but international students should normally prepare:

  • Valid foreign passport
  • New Zealand student visa
  • University admission or enrolment confirmation
  • Proof of residential address
  • Overseas tax identification number
  • New Zealand mobile number when required
  • Email address
  • New Zealand IRD number, if available
  • Evidence showing the source of large deposits
  • Certified translations for documents not written in English

New customers must verify both their identity and residential address. ASB, for example, accepts online verification in some cases and certified copies from an approved trusted referee when required.

Banks must also collect foreign tax-residency details. Students who remain tax residents of another country may need to provide that country’s Tax Identification Number.

Step 3: Apply Before or After Arrival

Applying From Overseas

ASB, BNZ, ANZ and Westpac provide application routes for some customers before they arrive in New Zealand.

For an overseas ASB application, students may need:

  • Certified copy of the passport
  • Visa information
  • Proof of overseas residential address
  • Tax-residency information

ASB accepts documents such as recent bank statements or utility bills showing the applicant’s name and physical address.

BNZ allows eligible applicants to submit an overseas application and may issue internet-banking details within five business days after approval. The student must visit a branch after arrival to activate the account and collect the card.

Applying After Arrival

Students who wait until they reach New Zealand should first arrange:

  1. A residential address
  2. A local mobile number
  3. Original identity and visa documents
  4. Proof of university enrolment
  5. A branch appointment if required

Westpac accepts a New Zealand or overseas passport from newly arrived applicants. Proof of address can include qualifying government correspondence or other accepted residential documents.

Step 4: Complete Identity Verification

The bank may verify you through:

  • A branch appointment
  • A mobile identity-checking application
  • Photo and selfie verification
  • Certified documents
  • A trusted referee
  • New Zealand RealMe identification

Foreign-passport holders are more likely to require branch verification. BNZ allows customers to open an account at a branch using a passport from any country and may require online applicants to verify their documents within one month.

Bring original documents whenever possible. Screenshots and ordinary photocopies may not be accepted.

Step 5: Obtain an IRD Number

An IRD number is New Zealand’s tax identification number. Inland Revenue states that it is used for opening bank accounts, earning income and receiving taxable interest.

New arrivals holding student, work or visitor visas may be able to apply online using immigration information shared by Immigration New Zealand.

Some banks may begin the account-opening process before the IRD number is issued. Provide it as soon as possible so the correct withholding-tax rate can be applied to savings interest.

Step 6: Activate the Account and Debit Card

After the bank approves and activates the account:

  • Collect or receive your debit card
  • Create the card PIN
  • Activate mobile and internet banking
  • Confirm your New Zealand account number
  • Test the account with a small transfer
  • Add the account to your digital wallet
  • Update your university or scholarship provider
  • Set up rent and utility payments
  • Enable transaction and fraud alerts

New Zealand does not generally use IBANs. International transfers are normally sent using the local account number and the bank’s SWIFT or BIC details.

Can You Transfer Money Before Arriving?

Some banks allow incoming transfers before the student completes final activation. However, withdrawals and outgoing payments may remain blocked until identity verification is completed.

Before transferring a large amount:

  1. Confirm that the account is approved.
  2. Request the correct SWIFT instructions.
  3. Compare exchange rates and receiving fees.
  4. Ask whether the funds will be restricted.
  5. Keep proof showing where the money came from.

Banks may request scholarship letters, overseas statements or family-support documents to verify the source of funds.

Are Student Bank Deposits Protected?

The New Zealand Depositor Compensation Scheme protects eligible deposits up to NZ$100,000 per depositor, per deposit taker if a participating institution fails. The scheme began on July 1, 2025.

Check that the specific account is labelled as DCS protected before depositing substantial savings.
